For a whole month we have been seeing at least a case each week of cops from the Met Police being caught or being taken to court for various things such as child abuse, sexual assault, voyeurism and so on.
Previous statistics show that at least 26 officers since 2005 have been convicted of sexual offences. Certainly there has been a steep increase in these cases during 2016 with current cases totalling at least nine so far. In one week alone there were three cases where officers were convicted of sexual crimes (see Met Police – A week of perverts). During 2015 there were more than 12,000 complaints of sexual assault against Met Police officers.
Here’s a round up of sexual assault cases involving Met officers during the second half of March and first half of April 2016:
The worst example of all has been that of DC Chris Maitland. Shockingly this cop worked in the Met’s prestige sexual offences, exploitation and child abuse command known as Sapphire. The unit’s work is centered on rapes and sexual offences, as well as FGM (Project Azure) and part of the unit’s job is to investigate sex crimes against children.
DC Maitland from Plymouth pleaded guilty to taking indecent pictures of children, with news reports informing he had 818 indecent images and videos of children, some in the top Category A, which denotes images that depict extreme sexual scenes.
Maitland made two court appearances the first on 17th March at Westminster Magistrates Court and the second on 15th April 2016 at Southwark Crown Court.
Following the earlier reports a further one emerged which revealed in 2005 DC Maitland had sexually touched a girl who had not even reached her teen years. The judge at Westminster Magistrates Court commented that the images in Maitland’s posession had been “pretty gruesome.”
He is due to be sentenced for a total of 14 sexual offences at Southwark in May.
Other cases include the following:
1. PC Rupert Watkins from West Wickham who downloaded category A child images depicting extreme sexual scenes onto his iPhone. He was arrested in July 2015 and faced trial at Westminster Magistrates Court court in December 2015, where he pleaded guilty to making indecent photos of children.
A further court appearance by Watkins was made at Southwark Crown Court on 16 January 2016 where he recieved his sentencing.
Watkins was caught by the Met’s own paedophile investigation unit. He recieved a two year community order, a sexual harm prevention order and ordered to pay costs as well as being placed on the sex offenders register. He remained on full pay as a policeman for months despite being found guilty and was finally sacked from the Met on 21 March 2016. Standard
2. Harold Wood cop John Wigglesworth was sacked from the Met on 4th April 2016 after having been found conducting sexual relations with a 14 year old girl. He had been jailed at Snaresbrook Crown Court for four years on 25 February 2016 for the offences, put on the sex offenders register for life and recieved an indefinite sexual harm prevention order. Standard
3. Lithuanian Rytis Gilys from Southend who worked as a police officer in Newham, London, was jailed on 19th April 2016 for sexually assaulting a female colleague in a patrol car. Daily Mirror
Of course there have been a whole host of cases of other sorts in these few weeks of 2016. These have included officers having sex with rape victims whilst on duty, stealing motor bikes and bikes, abusing police databases, assaulting a man at a bus station, assaulting a man in Camden, dangerous driving, not paying taxi fares, and quite a few others.
